MoneyCalc

Cost of Waiting to Invest Calculator

Compare investing now with starting later at the same end date. Separate missed contributions from the difference in compounded growth.

Before you calculate

Monthly deposits occur at month-end. During the delay the starting lump sum stays in cash earning 0%; missed monthly contributions are not saved. Returns are constant assumptions, with no taxes, fees or inflation. At negative returns, delaying can produce a higher ending balance.

What changes if I start investing later?

Both scenarios end on the same future date. Starting later reduces the number of contributions and the time available for growth. The result separates the contributions not made during the delay from the remaining growth difference, so the entire gap is not mislabeled as lost interest.

Future value = P(1 + r)^n + C × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r; r is the effective monthly return

Worked example

At 0% return, waiting 5 years to contribute $300 per month means $18,000 fewer contributions. Any larger gap at a positive assumed rate includes a growth difference as well.

How to interpret MoneyCalc estimates

Frequently asked questions

Is the entire difference lost compound interest?

No. Part comes from fewer deposits. The calculator displays missed contributions separately from the growth difference.

What if I save the monthly money in cash while waiting?

That is a different scenario. This tool assumes missed monthly contributions are not accumulated. You would need to include that additional cash before comparing total wealth.
